2009 Reddish Vale Country Park Apple Day
2009 Reddish Vale Country Park Apple Day
The weather forecast wasn't looking good for this years Apple Day, but it stopped raining and the sun eventually came out.
There were the usual attractions along with a few new ones.
A lot of research went into the William Tell stand to make sure
it was historically accurate, and I think you will agree from the photos below we got it right, it was like looking back in time?
The apple press was in action again providing fresh apple juice, a slight change with the apple bobbing this year, the apples were hung from a tree in the Community Garden instead of bobbing in water.
There was a problem with the longest peel competition, someone wiped the score board clean before I could make a note of the winner, but I have been told it was over 7ft long!
Stockport R.S.P.B were there along with The Butterfly Conservation Trust, woodturner Robert Rooney was busy on his lathe turning cups.
A.R.C brought along their Poet-Tree, and was decorated with the poems from your Community Poem on this web site. there was also a display of their art work in the Visitor Centre.
Another new event this year was the Wassailing, led by musicians we walked through Sunnyside Woods to the Community Garden, party poppers were used to scare the evil spirits from the apple trees (apparently shotguns are sometimes used for this, but Health and Safety wouldn't allow us to use ours!) and toast was hung on the trees to ensure a good crop of apples next year, will it work?
The Volunteers and Rangers at Reddish Vale have put in a lot of work to improve the Country Park and this has been rewarded with a Green Flag Award, the day was rounded off with the raising of the flag in the car park.
