As suggested by Phil's reply in the recent forum pages, fishing on the ponds in the close appears to be allowed at a cost of about £3.00.

The river is of course subject to the usual coarse close season. There are trout , which can be fished for with the legal trout tactics and legal baits, but the trout are fairly few and far between, not easy to locate.

We have been told that the gate blocking access from the Nature Trail leading from Reddish Vale Road to the Community Garden and the children's play area is to be opened after our long struggle. Why it was erected by the council is still a mystery because it blocks a long-established route through from Mill Lane to Willow Avenue, crossing the golf course along the river bank. Volunteers who have worked in the Vale for years still use it but they have to climb over gates and obstructions. When this is done mothers with small children will no longer have to run the gauntlet of the traffic at weekends to reach the Visitor Centre. It will need to be signposted where pedestrians can see it. That is outside the farm car park. No doubt the sense and simplicity of this important signposting will be seen by the responsible authority, Parks and Recreation and it will be in place as part of the much-needed access improvements that are the first criterion of a Country Park according to the Country Parks Association.

Pipes laid in specially for martins would not of course be at risk from rain in any case. I don't know where the Vale martins nest, but how high are their burrows above water level?

I read about the sand martins, and about there being less of them this year. But there is also a colony of sand martins very near to Stockport town centre. And these are not nesting in sand. They have opted for an easier and more comfortable lifestyle, and nest in pipes protruding from high vertical walls forming the retaining walls of the Mersey. I did worry at times what might, under certain conditions, flow out of the pipework, but they seemed to have bred very successfully in 2007. See them next year immediately downstream of the King Street West bridge flying over the river. I wonder also whether a few similar pipes embedded into a suitable area might encourage their numbers elsewhere.

Rivers ( and lakes) seem to attract bats in the evening ( and through the night although they are then rather more difficult to see. I have only ever seen one bat in the UK during broad daylight, which was drinking in mid afternoon sun from a Cheshire mere in exactly the same way that swallows drink, by dipping down to the water surface. Even then, due to unfamiliarity I was unable to identify the species. I was also wondering whether it was then navigation by sight or sound. So my question is, using a bat detector, are you able to identify the species? By frequency of call, or by call "phraseology"? Does it take experience, or can a beginner make an accurate assessment?

Ideas I have had and hope for support from all are Butterfly day this is a day in July (school holidays) and that week we are hoping to involve all visitors to learm more about butterflies (obviously) we will be hoping to do face painting for children making butterfly finger puppets as well as walking around the butterfly cafe, serving butterfly cakes and making willow butterflies to make and take, we haven't had the ok from the centre yet as this is still in the planning stages. Also water divining I know when I did it it really did blow me away as I always thought it was a con, I am going to ask heritage if they can get me some info on this. Worm charming we did this last year with Lorretta college and it was a great success and a lot of fun so I am going to see if we can make it bigger and better this year involving more people. I am already in discussion with heritage to try and get a little booklet put together about the history of Reddish Vale. All the information is there it just needs putting all together. These are just a few ideas that Tracy and I have been tossing around any ideas that anyone has please pass them on we will always support.

This is an excellent idea. I think the important thing about it should be that the tributes should be either trees or plants. Cut flowers would be OK in receptacles. No windmills, teddy bears and other junk. It is difficult to obtain permission for benches etc at present but this would be lovely. An important other consideration is where to position it. How about the field behind the Butterfly Field? This used to be kept fenced to keep stock in. It is quiet and peaceful.

Pat

I noticed over Christmas, flowers and cards being left in different places around the Vale in memory of loved ones, who must have loved the Vale and just thought it would be nice to have a memorial garden, where people could come and plant a tree, shrub or flowers in memory of family and friends.

yup, as is always the case, blame one animal for another animals problems rather than do absolutely anything else at all... I'm sure the government would feel so good knowing they're wasting money if a cull is called...

(And here's me thinking badgers were protected? where?!)

Same with grey squirrels... rather than do any kind of proper research, they just go out and do more damage to further prove their case!

I can't defend the government - especially when they want to bring in wild boars and beavers!

I don't rightly think they know what they're doing...!

There is no properly funded dedicated research centre anywhere that specialises in animal diseases and how to cure it (or minimise the risks somewhat) so that every time there's something on the news about an animal related disease, further distruction is done rather than proper sensible preventative measures that do not include killing animals!

A thought has just occured to me - wasn't there a vaccination scheme set up some time ago with badgers? If memory serves me well, some were immunised against tb........ oh, well done the UK government!!

(we all know that diseases can also be spread by other animals - and as they're slightly more hygenic than we are, I guess the real answer here is the species of animal known as the 'human'!)

Tu berculosis is an extremely serious disease and, milk was the cause of its spreading so widely in the 19th century. However, pasteurisation, sterilization, tu berculin testing of herds as well as bcg vaccine helped to almost eradicate it. It is now on the increase, not through milk, but it is spreading among humans through a lack of education about it. Badgers are only carriers of bovine tb. I cannot see why cattle could not be immunized in the same way as people. However, there is no money to be made out of badgers so, I guess they must pay the ultimate price for human greed.

The government will soon be making a decision on whether to go ahead with a cull of badgers as a means of controlling bovine TB in England.

The government commissioned a trial costing taxpayers £50 million in which just under 11,000 badgers were culled between 1998 and early 2006. It was designed by the Independant Scientific Group on Cattle TB and it investigated how TB spread between cattle, badgers and other wildlife. Their conclusion was that while badgers are a source of bovine TB, badger culling can make no meaningful contribution to cattle TB control in Britain.

The government seems to have ignored the results of this trial and are still deciding whether to go ahead with the cull.
