St.Mary's Church
By Mary Dutton
How blessed were we? Saturday the 18th July you would expect it to be sunny wouldn't you? Well I would but when I heard and saw the rain that morning oh dear.
However as the day went on it became brighter and brighter I would like to say that all the ground was nice and dry but well that didn't matter. St. Mary's from Haughton Green were coming down for an afternoon of fun and learning. As the cars started pulling up adults and children piled into the visitors centre. Don't you just love the sound of excited children? I do. So after a whose doing what start we broke into two groups one group pond dipping and one group going scavenging for soil leaves and worms and bugs for the wormery.
Ray gave us a talk about how we couldn't live without trees and just how important they are in our lives, we went scavenging, for different level of earth to build up our wormery. Believe me when I say it wasn't long before everyone Mums, Dads as well as the youngster were lifting up wood and collecting bits of earth, moss, leaves and worms. Great excitement over a baby toad, can you remember how you knew it was a toad and not a frog? Meanwhile across from the dirt and worm finders the other group were pond dipping. Yes thanks to Dave and John Children and parents alike lying on their tummies with their brightly coloured nets dipping for all they were worth. After I saw little minnows (don't quote me on that that's what they looked like to me)and all sorts of water beetles and larva. Great fun was had by all. Later we all went back to the visitors centre for a welcome cup of tea and juice while the important task of building up the wormery started. With the little ones finishing it of putting in the worms. Phil was there taking photographs can you see yourselves? I have to say a massive thank you to the staff and volunteers at Reddish Vale but most of all thank-you St. Mary's for coming down and making the event the great day it was. If you all enjoyed it as much as I did then you had a great day. Don't forget to try and come down in the holidays and see how the wormery is doing. Hope to see you all again.
